Abstract

In the 19th century, Romanticism which developed as a reaction to the cosmopolitan and progressive understanding of history of the Enlightenment argued that each nation emerged and developed under its own historical conditions. Emphasizing the uniqueness of nations, Romanticism provided the necessary motivation for the influential nationalist movements in this century and became a driving force in the construction of national identities and nation-states. On the one hand, the desire to attach the individualities torn by modernization to a national belonging, and on the other hand to determine the origins of nation emerged as a political subject, directed the owners of power, thinkers and artists to history. As a result of this new historical consciousness, epics including myths of origin were compiled and cultures that developed throughout history were explored. The knowledge obtained was also processed through literature, music and painting, and it was tried to awaken national consciousness in society. The historical Romanticism, which developed in Europe, especially in Germany, England and France, also echoed in the Ottoman Empire, which was disintegrated by nationalist movements. As a result of the wars and land losses during the century, the Ottoman intellectual wanted to turn back to its own history and find solutions to the problems of the day. In this respect, it can be said that Turkish intellectuals turned back to the history with a national romantic attitude. In this direction, some of them focused on Ottoman and Islamic centuries while others discovered Turkishness in pre-Islamic history. While Turkish intellectuals were discovering their own identity, literature had a social function from time to time. This study will examine the traces of the historical romanticism developed in Turkish Poetry in the Reform Period from the Tanzimat to Republican period.

Özet

19. yüzyılda Aydınlanma’nın kozmopolit ve ilerlemeci tarih anlayışına karşıt biçimde gelişen Romantik düşünce, her milletin kendine özgü tarihi şartlarda ortaya çıkıp geliştiğini savunmuştur.
