Abstract
In this study, the etymology and the concepts of the word ber- enarı ~ bereŋarı which is used in central and western Anatolian dialects are examined. Afyon, Usak, Kutahya, Manisa, Bilecik, Bursa, Burdur, Aydın, Eskişehir, Konya, Ankara, Izmir, Nigde, Canakkale, Mugla prov- inces are shown as compilation places of the word, which has around twenty variants in the Compilation Dictionary (Derleme Sozlugu). There are no sample contexts about berenarı in the Compilation Dictionary. This situation makes it difficult to determine the meaning of the word entirely. For this reason, existing text publications compiled from Turk- ish dialects have been scanned. Thus, the contextual meanings of the word have been revealed. The word is recorded in the Compilation Dic- tionary with the meanings of so so, reasonably, more or less, quite, some, superficial. The meanings found in the scanned texts are as follows: more or less, some, so so, a little better than before, somehow, enough to go on with, tolerable, moderate, tolerable, neither good nor bad, a little better than in a bad situation, a little better, ordinary. It is thought that bereŋarı developed from a reduplication (beri aŋarı) consisting of two antonyms originally. In terms of meaning, the word reflects the char- acteristics of the reduplication type it represents. Antonyms point out the boundaries between two opposite concepts when they form a reduplica- tion. These boundaries sometimes cover everything between the two con- cepts, and sometimes point out a place in the middle of the two concepts. Regarding the identified meanings of the berenarı reduplication, average becomes more common as its meaning.
