ALEVISM IN NORTH CYPRUS IN THE TRIANGLE OF MEDIA, GOVERNMENT AND RELIGION

Abstract

In the history of Cyprus, the issue of Alevism has been the subject of debate many times. Thisstudy examines the different arguments in understanding the Islam of Turkish Cypriots afterthe conquest of Cyprus in 1571 by the Ottoman Empire of the Turkish Cypriots migrationin 1572. As a section of the Turkish Cypriots defend that they are Alevi in origin, the othersection of Turkish Cypriots understanding of Islam is influenced by an impact of mysticalascendancy. In another opinion, Turkish Cypriots have put forward that the understandingof Islam was shaped by the political atitudes throughout history. Following, is the examina- tion of controversial Alevism on how the press of North Cyprus three most widely followednewspapers have handled and shown the practice of communication from the perspectiveof Cyprus. Primarily, how the press have situated the agenda of Alevism is examined. The manner of reporting news were examined in the direction of the general editorial policy ofthe media with the news related to the subject. The result of two and a half years of scanningelectronic archive reports on the Alevi, the present mind on understanding the affairs of Al- evism influencing factor in North Cyprus has been attempted by a means of quantitative andqualitative content analysis, examining the meanings that can be inferred from the news. Thenews was read in the triangle of media, government and religion.

Kıbrıs tarihinde Alevilik konusu birçok kez tartışmaya konu olmuştur. Bu çalışmadaKıbrısın Osmanlı İmparatorluğu tarafından 1571de fethinden sonra 1572de adaya yapılangöçerimlerin Kıbrıslı Türklerin Müslümanlık anlayışı üzerindeki etkileri farklı savlara göreincelenmiştir. Bir kesim Kıbrıslı Türklerin Alevi kökenli olduğunu savunurken diğer kesimKıbrıslı Türklerin Müslümanlık anlayışı üzerinde Alevlilğin etkilerini mistik sıçramalarolarak değerlendirmektedir. Bir başka görüş ise tarih boyu siyasi tutumların Kıbıslı TürklerinMüslümanlık anlayışını şekillendirdiğini öne sürmüştür. Ardından Kıbrıs açısından tartışmalıAlevilik konusunun, Kuzey Kıbrıs yazılı basınının en çok takip edilen üç gazetesinde ele alınışşekli ve nasıl bir haberleştirme pratiği gördüğü incelenmiştir. Öncelikle Alevilik konusununbasın gündeminde yer alış şekli incelenmiştir. Konuya ilişkin haberlerin basın genel yayınpolitikası doğrultusunda haberleştirilme şekline bakılmıştır. İki buçuk yıllık elektronik arşivtaraması sonucu Alevilikle ilgili çıkan haberler içerik analizi vasıtasıyla nicel ve nitel olarakincelenmiş ve bu haberlerden çıkarılabilecek anlamlar üzerine düşünülerek günümüzdeAleviliğin Kuzey Kıbrıstaki ahvali anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Haberler medya, iktidar ve dinüçgeninde okunmuştur.
