Abstract

We measured malondialdehyde, ascorbic acid and glutathione levels in the liver, kidneys and brain tissues in mice to evaluate the biological effects of low frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system. All the mice were exposed to 120 $mu$T EMF in special cages for 18 days, 7 hours per day. After EMF exposure, lipid peroxidation was found to be decreased in all tissues when compared to the controls, but this difference was not statistically significant in all tissues, except kidney. Levels of ascorbic acid and glutathione were slightly higher in the liver and brain, whereas those in the kidneys were significantly low. The results of this study revealed that exposure to EMF may produce different responses in the kidneys of mice when compared with other tissues and this may be due to variabilities in the dielectric characteristics and conductivity of tissues.
