Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of daily lens wear on the bacterial flora of the con¬junctiva and the contamination of lens storage solutions. Cultures from the conjunctiva of both eyes and lens storage solutions were obtained from a total of 50 asymptomatic cases, in whom 23 (46 eyes) were using hard 8®$ permeable lenses and 27 (54 eyes) were using soft lenses. Conjunctival cultures were also obtained from 56 healthy cases (112 eyes) ofnon lens users, as a control group. Conjunctival cultures of hard lens, soft lens and control cases revealed, respectively, 34.8%, 25.9% and'48.2% coagulase negative staphylococci; 17.4%, 16.7% and 10.7% diphteroids; 15.2%, 9-3% and 11.6% alpha haemolytic streptococci; 17.4%, 13%, and20.5% mic-ncoccus; 4.3%, 1.9% and 4.5% haemophilus spp.; 2.2%, 0% and 1.8% Morexalla catarrhalis; 0%, 1.9% and °o/oE. coli; 2.2%, 1.9% and 0% P. aeruginosa: Thirteen (56.5%) of the 23 hard lens storage solutions and 14 (51.9%) of the 27 soft lens storage solutions were contaminated. The members of the family Enterobacteriaceae andP. aeruginosa were isolated from hard lens storage solutions as 34.8% and 13%; and from soft lens stora ge solutions as 25-9% and 18.6%, respectively. We found that, daily contact lens usage did not alter the distri button of microorganisms found in the conjunctival flora; in contrary a higher incidence of contamination q the lens storage solutions with P. aeruginosa and Gram negative enteric bacilli were detected.

Özet

Qah§mamizda, giinliik kontakt lens kullamminin bakteriyel konjonktival floraya olan etkisini ve lens saklama soliisyonlannm kontaminasyonunu ara§tirmayi amagladik. Yirmiilcil (46 goz) serf gaz gecirgen, 27'si (54 g6z) yumusak kontakt lens kullanan toplam 50 asemptomatik olgunun her iki goz konjonktivasindan ve lens saklama kaplanndaki solilsyonlardan killtiir yapildi. Kontakt lens kullanmayan 56 olgudan da (112 goz) kontrolgrubu olusturularak konjonktiva killturleri alindi. Serf lens, yumusak lens ve kontrolgrubu olgulannm konjonktivalartnda sirasiyla koagiilaz negatif stafilokok %34.8, %25.9 ve %48.2; difteroidler %17.4, %16.7 ve %10.7; alfa hemolitik streptokok %15.2, %93 ve %11.6; mikrokok %17.4, %13 ve %20.5; hemofilus tilrleri %4.3, %1.9've %4.5; Morexalla catarrhalis %2.2, %0 ve %1.8; E. coli %0, %1.9 ve %0; P. aeruginosa %2.2, %1.9 ve %0 oranlannda uretildi. Omek ahnan 23 sert lens saklama kabmdaki solilsyonlartn 13'ilnde (%56.5) ve 27 yumusak lens saklama kabmdaki solilsyonlann ise 14'ilnde (%51.9) kontaminasyon saptandi. Sert lens ve yu¬musak lens saklama solilsyonlannda sirasiyla Enterobacteriaceae ilyelerini %34.8, %25.9; P. aeruginosa 'yi ise %13, %18.6 oranmda izole ettik. Giinliik kontakt lens kullamminin konjonktival florada ilreyen mikroorga-nizmalann dagihmini etkilemedigini; buna kargm lens saklama kaplanndaki solilsyonlarda ise yuksek oran-lardaP. aeruginosa ve Gram negatif enterik bakteri kontaminasyonu oldugunu saptadik.
