Abstract

In the present study we investigated blood viscosity changes and its relationship with plasma fibrinogen and cholesterol, two of well-established cardiovascular risk factors in obese patients. Our study group consisted of 38 young obese patients with mean age 22.24±3-94 years. Thirty healthy subjects were investigated as control gro¬ up. In both study and control groups body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol and plasma fibrinogen levels, whole blood and plasma viscosity were inedsured. We have shown that in young obese patients both whole blo¬ od and plasma viscosity were significantly increased when compared with in healthy subjects and the increase in viscosity was well correlated with BMI and plasma fibrinogen level. As a result, we may suggest that haemor- heological disturbances may partly explain the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in obese pa¬ tients.
