Abstract

In this study, 134 patients with lung malignancies were examined for antibodies against Toxoplasma using ELISA, The results obtained from the patient group were compared with those of 24 healthy controls. The rate of Toxoplasma IgG positivity in patients with malignancies was 52% and in the controls, 66%. There was a marginally significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05). Forty-three sera with a Toxoplasma-lgG level higher than 150 U/ml in both the patient and control groups were investigated for the presence of specific IgM. Toxoplasma IgM was found in one person in each of the patient and control groups. This low rate may be explained by a decreased humoral immune response by the immunosuppressed patients. Thus, serological diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in these patients may require more repeated tests than it does in other patients.
