Detection of Giardia intestinalis in duodenal aspirates and stools in patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the probability of Giardia intestinalis'sbeing found in duodenal aspirates and stools of patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. The identification of Giardia was made by carrying out the modified zinc sulphate flotation method three times on each duodenal aspirate and making slide preparation with saline and Lugol. G. intestinalis were found in the stools of 2 (1.8%) out of 112 patients. No G, intestinalis were found in the duodenal aspirates of 89 patients whose stools were negative. Thus, the examination of stools is sufficient in the diagnosis of Giardiasis.
Özet
Üst gastrointestinal sistem yakınması olan hastalardan sağlanan duodenal aspirat örneklerinde ve üç kez modifiye çinko sülfat yüzdürme yöntemi uygulanan dışkı örneklerinin incelemesinde Giardia intestinalis araştırılmıştır. 112 hastadan alınan dışkı örneklerinin 3 kez incelenmesi sonucu 2 (%1.8) G, intestinalis saptanırken, negatif 89 hatadan yapılan duodenal aspirasyon sıvısı incelemesinde G. intestinalis bulunamadı. Dışkı incelemesinin gerekli yöntemlerle ve sürelerde yapılması tanıda oldukça yararlı bulunmuştur.
