Serological results of patients suspected of having echinococcosis presenting at the Department of Parasitology of the School of Medicine, Dokuz Eylül University during the past year

Abstract

It is known that serological methods are important in the diagnosis of hydatidosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus. This study was conducted from January 1 to July 31, 2001 in the Department of Parasitology of the Medical School, Dokuz Eylül University. The sera of 118 patients with suspected hydatid disease were investigated. Seventy-three of these patients were female and 45, male. They were patients in the dermatology, gastroenterology, surgery, and chest clinics. Most of the patients were 45 years and over. The serum samples were analyzed for the presence of antibodies by the indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Twenty-three sera out of 118 were positive and 87 of them were negative with both of the methods. Low positivity was found by ELISA in 8 sera that were negative with IHA.

Özet

Echinococcus granulosus'un sebep olduğu kistik ekinokokkozisin tanısında serolojik testlerin önemli bir parametre olduğu bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmada Ocak 2001-Temmuz 2001 tarihleri arasında Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Parazitoloji Anabilim Dalına kistik ekinokokkozis şüphesi ile gelen 118 hasta serumu incelendi. Hastaların 73'ü (%61,9) kadın. 45'i (%38,2) erkekti. Hastalar en çok Genel Cerrahi, Göğüs, Dermatoloji ve Gastroenteroloji Anabilim dallarından gönderilmişti. Hastaların çoğu 45 yaş ve üzerindeydi (%61.01). Hasta serumlarında Indirekt Hemaglütınasyon (IHA) ve Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) yöntemleri ile antikor arandı. 118 şüpheli hasla serumundan 87'si (%73.7) her iki test ile negatif iken 23'ü (% 19.5) her iki test ile pozitif, 8'i (%6.8) ise IHA'da negatif, ELISA'da düşük titrede pozitif olarak bulundu.
