Biology and replication of baculoviruses

Abstract

Baculoviruses have become a noteworthy research and study material for various applications in recent years. They are used as insecticides in agriculture because of their high host specifity. Recombinant baculoviruses are being used in biotechnology for the expression of related genes under the control of strong polh and p10 genes promoters. They have attracted attention as gene therapy vectors in medicine. Baculoviruses can enter the mammalian cells; however, they neither replicate nor show any pathogenic effect. Also baculoviruses are model organisms for molecular biology studies of gene structure and organization. Although baculoviruses are used commonly, their genome replication is not understood. Most of the research data about this subject have been obtained during recent years. Human beings have just begun to benefit from the use of baculoviruses. Baculoviruses will serve science in the future as mentioned above. We believe that this review will contribute to the appreciation of the field in our country in regard to baculoviruses which are popular all over the world. For this reason, in this review after giving information about the biology of baculoviruses, replication of baculoviruses has been explained in detail.

Özet

Baculovirus'ler, çeşitli uygulama alanlarında son yıllarda önemli derecede ilgi çeken araştırma ve çalışma materyalleri haline gelmişlerdir. Yüksek konak seçiciliği sayesinde tarımda insektisid olarak kullanılmaktadırlar. Rekombinant Baculovirus'ler, güçlü polh ve p10 geni promotorlerinin kontrolü altında ilgi duyulan genlere ait çeşitli proteinlerin ekspresyonunda biyoteknolojide kullanılmaktadırlar. Tıp sahasında gen terapisi konusunda gen terapi vektörleri olarak dikkat çekmektedirler. Çünkü Baculovirus'ler memeli hücrelerine girmekte ancak, ne replike olmakta ne de patojenik bir etki göstermektedirler. Aynı zamanda Baculovirus'ler gen yapı ve organizasyonları bakımından moleküler biyoloji çalışmalarında model olan ajanlardır. Baculovirus'ler pratikte yaygın bir şekilde kullanılmalarına rağmen, genom replikasyonları hala tam olarak anlaşılamamıştır. Bu konuyla ilgili deneysel verilerin çoğunluğu son birkaç yıl içinde elde edilmiştir. İnsanlık Baculovirus'lerden elde edeceği nimetlerin henüz başındadır. Yukarıda bahsedilen özellikleriyle baculovirus'ler daha uzun yıllar bilim dünyasına hizmet edecektir. Bu eserin, bütün dünyada çok popüler olan Baculovirus'lere ülkemizdeki ilgi eksikliğinin giderilmesi husunda büyük katkı sağlayacağına inanmaktayız. Bu nedenle, bu derlemede Baculovirus'lerin biyolojileri hakkında bilgiler verildikten sonra, baculovirus replikasyonu ayrıntılı bir şekilde açıklanmaktadır.
