Determination of allelopathic effect of cover crop India mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) coss.)

Abstract

In this study, the allelopathic effect of India mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Coss.) aqueous extract of leaves was investigated on two crop species (Lactuca sativa L. and Zea mays L.) and on two weeds (Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Lolium perenne L.). The experiment was conducted by using different concentrations of the aqueous extract of cover crop (5%, 25% and 50%) in sterilized petri dishes with constant room temperature and replicated twice. Leaves of cover crop were soaked in distilled water at room temperature (25 ºC) through one week and filtered with pore size 0.22 µm. The extract solution (10 ml) was added to 10 seeds of each plant species and 50 seeds of each weed species in petri dishes. At the same time, distilled water without the extract solution was used as the control. The number of germinated seeds and radicle lenght were measured after week. The results showed that extract solutions of B. juncea (5, 25 and 50%) reduced germination of L. sativa with 10.96%, 45.21% and 59.58%; Z. mays with 12.82%, 30.77% and 78.84%, A. retroflexus with 23.29%, 41.10% and 93.15%, L. perenne with 2.15%, 39.78% and 91.29%, respectively. Besides, leaf extract of B. juncea (5, 25 and 50%) reduced radicle length of L. sativa with 36.56%, 73.24% and 86.35%; Z. mays with 30.37%, 42.01%, and 69.43%, A. retroflexus with 57.92%, 65.29% and 73.86%, L. perenne with 30.16%, 63.84% and 92.24%, respectively.

Özet

Bu çalışmada Hint hardalı (Brassica juncea (L.) Coss.) örtücü bitkisinin, kültür bitkileri (Marul ve mısır) ile yabancı ot türlerine (Amaranthus retroflexus L. ve Lolium perenne L.) olan allelopatik etkisi araştırılmıştır. Çalışma örtücü bitki türünün % 5, % 25 ve % 50’lik yaprak suyu ekstraktları hazırlanıp steril petri kapları içerisinde ve sabit oda sıcaklığında 2 kez tekrarlanarak yapılmıştır. Örtücü bitki yaprağı bir hafta süre ile distile su içerisinde bırakılmış ve daha sonra 0.22 µm’lık filtreden geçirilmiştir. Bitki ekstraktları kültür bitkileri için 10, yabancı ot türleri için ise 50 tohum bırakılan petrilere 10 ml olacak şekilde uygulanmıştır. Aynı zamanda ekstre çözeltisi içermeyen distile su uygulaması kontrol olarak kullanılmıştır. Bir hafta bekletildikten sonra çimlenen tohumlar sayılıp, kökçük uzunlukları ölçülmüştür. Sonuç olarak, hint hardalının farklı bitki ekstraktlarının (% 5, % 25 ve % 50) marul bitkisinin çimlenmesini sırasıyla % 10.96, % 45.21 ve % 59.58, mısır bitkisini % 12.82, % 30.77 ve % 78.84, yabancı ot türlerinden A. retroflexus’u % 23.29, % 41.10 ve % 93.15, L. perenne’yi % 2.15, % 39.78 ve % 91.29 oranında azalttığı saptanmıştır. Yine Hint hardalının farklı oranlarda hazırlanmış olan yaprak marul bitkisinin kökçük uzunluklarını sırasıyla % 36.59, % 73.24 ve % 86.35, mısır bitkisinin % 30.37, % 42.01 ve % 69.43, yabancı ot türlerinden A. retroflexus’un % 57.92, % 65.29 ve % 73.86, L. perenne’nin % 30.16, % 63.84 ve % 92.24 oranında azalttığı saptanmıştır.
