Abstract

Thysanoptera fauna and population fluctuations of some important thrips species and predatory insects in alfalfa in Adana, Turkey were investigated in years 2002 and 2003. Thrips and predatory insect species were sampled by taking plant parts and using sweep-net and yellow sticky traps. A total of 15 thrips species were detected. Frankliniella occidentalls (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) was the most prevailing species and constituted 86 % of the adults sampled. It was followed at a far distance by Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) and Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) which had a share of 4 and 3 % only, respectively. F. occidentalis and T. tabaci were active in the alfalfa fields also during the winter months, while the first adults of F. intonsa were not recorded on plants before last week of April or beginning of May. Both Frankliniella species showed main population developments in spring and presumably migrated to surrounding vegetation after mid-June. Predatory thrips, Aeolothrips spp. (A. collaris Priesner and A. intermedius Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae) and generalist predator, Orius spp. [(O. niger Wolff and O. laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae)] were more common compared to the other predators. Though existed in lower levels fluctuations in populations of Aeolothrips spp. were, in general, related to those of other thrips species. Orius spp. were observed to prey upon various insect preys including thrips during summer months.
