The epidemiological features of the newly onset colorectal cancer patients

Abstract

Objective: We aimed to investigate the sociodemographic, and clinical features with probable risk factors in the patients who were newly diagnosed as colorectal cancer (CRC) in Ondokuz May s University Hospital. Methods: We have included 123 patients determined from the database of the Ondokuz May s University Medical Faculty Hospital between January 2005 and December 2008 with the keywords ofcolon and adeno-carcinoma as pathological pre-diagnoses. The demographic features of the patients, their family stories and accompanying diseases as well as different clinical features related to the colorectal cancers, smoking and alcohol status, and body mass indices were retrospectively investigated from patient records and telephone calls. Results: Of the 123 patients included in the study, 66 (53.7%) were men and 57 (46.3%) were women. The frequency of CRC is increased between the ages of 51 and 80. Most of the cases (n=101, 82.1%) were at the age of 51 and over. 13.8% of the patients had at least one first degree relative with CRC. The most frequent symptoms were occult blood in gaita (62.6%), constipation (51.2%) and abdominal pain (47.2%). Men smoke more (on average two times more) (t= 3.670, p
