Abstract

Shakespeare s Hamlet, directed by Muhsin Ertuğrul, was performed in 1941. The play had been translated by the students and professors of the English Department of İstanbul University, and it became a source of many positive and negative claims and critiques because of its translation and performance. Municipal Theatre and Muhsin Ertuğrul, as the director of the play, were also involved. The study comprises the arguments that had great public and pres interest and also the events and court cases that well-known literary figures of the time had to live through.

Özet

1941 yılında Muhsin Ertuğrulun yönetiminde Shakespearein Hamlet adlı eseri sahnelenir. İstanbul Üniversitesi İngiliz Edebiyatı bölümü tarafından çevrilen bu eser hakkında birçok iddia ortaya atılmış, eserin sahnelenişine, çevirisine yönelik olumlu ve olumsuz birçok eleştiri yapılmıştır. Şehir Tiyatrosu ve Muhsin Ertuğrul da bundan nasibini almıştır. Bu çalışmada ise halkın ve basının ilgisini çeken bu tartışmalar ele alınacak, ünlü edebiyatçıların birbirleri hakkında açtıkları davalarda yaşananlar üzerinde durulacaktır.
