Abstract

Sarajevo was a commercial center of the province of Bosnia during the Ottoman State. It enjoyed a lively economic life at the eighteenth century. Merchants and guilds used to transport the goods needed by the residents of the city from the countries overseas and ship them to the ports nearby Bosnia and carry them thereof via trade caravans to Sarajevo. The fires that had erupted in the markets of Sarajevo because of the wars between Austria and the Ottoman State affected badly the commercial life. Under such circumstances, the State had been taking care of the damages in a short time and reviving the trade again. Those who were engaged in the commercial activities in Sarajevo had at the same time say over the governance of the city. The guilds that were established in the city played an effective role in this matter.
