Abstract
The aim of this study was to provide some information to the hospital infection control committee about microbial contamination of faucets and liquid soap reservoirs in the hospital environment, as possible sources for nosocomial infections. In the Çankaya Branch of our hospital, which contains nine beds, 44 faucets and 26 liquid-soap reservoirs in the examination chambers, doctors’ rooms, nurses’ room, laboratories, kitchen and toilets were investigated. Totally 70 samples obtained (twice a day at 08.00 and 18.00) by soaked swabs were cultured on 5% sheep blood and eosin methylen blue agars and incubated overnight at 37°C. Bacterial or yeast growth were positive in 75% of first samples and 86% of second samples obtained from sink faucets. These numbers were 53% and 84% for the reservoirs, respectively. The results were evaluated statistically by use of c2 and McNemar tests on SPSS 9.05 software programme. A statistical difference was determined between the first and the second sample growth results and an increasing bacterial contamination along the day was established (p
