The adaptation of attitudes towards the eldely scale to Turkish with a group of university students

Abstract

Introduction: The main purpose of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of Kogan’s Scale of Attitudes Towards the Elderly with a group of university students. Materials and Method: In order to examine the validity and reliability of the scale, a Turkish version of the form is administered to 911 students from different departments of Ankara, Gazi and Hacettepe universities. Among the randomly selected sample, 627 students (68.8%) were female and 284 (31.2%) were male. Age of the students ranged from 18 to 35, and the mean age for the sample was 21.46 (2.11). Results: Cronbach Alpha test, showing the internal consistency of the Kogan’s Scale of Attitudes towards the Elderly, was 0.789 for positive attitudes subscale; was 0.794 for negative attitudes subscale and was 0.840 for total scale. Principal component analysis was applied to examine the validity of the scale. The results showed that the scale had two dimensions: total variability of the positive attitudes was 16.488%, and the negative attitudes was 9.830%, and total variability explained by these two dimensions was 26.318%. Conclusion: The current study conducted on a group of university students shows that Kogan’s Scale of Attitudes Towards the Elderly is a valid and reliable scale.

Girifl: Bu çal›flma Yafll›lara Yönelik Tutum Ölçe¤i’nin (Kogan’s Scale of Attitudes towards the Elderly) geçerli¤ini ve güvenirli¤i bir grup üniversite ö¤rencisi üzerinde incelemeyi amaçlamakta- d›r. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ölçe¤in güvenirli¤i ve geçerli¤inin belirlenmesi için Türkçe formu, Anka- ra, Gazi ve Hacettepe Üniversitesi’nin farkl› bölümlerinde okuyan 911 ö¤renciye uyguland›. Arafl- t›rma kapsam›na evrenden seçkisiz olarak al›nan ö¤rencilerin 627’si (%68,8) kad›n, 284’ü (%31,2) erkektir. Ö¤rencilerin yafl ortalamas› 21,46 (Ss=2,11) olup, yafllar› 18 ile 35 aras›nda de- ¤iflmektedir. Bulgular: Dokuz yüz on bir üniversite ö¤rencisi üzerinde uygulanan ölçe¤in Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik de¤eri olumlu tutum alt ölçe¤i için 0.789, olumsuz tutum alt ölçe¤i için 0.794 ve Yafl- l›lara Yönelik Tutum Ölçe¤inin tamam› için 0.840 olarak belirlendi. Geçerlik için yap›lan temel bi- leflenler analizi sonuçlar›, ölçe¤in iki boyutu oldu¤unu; olumlu tutumlarla ilgili faktöre ait toplam de¤iflkenli¤i aç›klama oran›n›n %16.488, olumsuz tutumlarda ilgili faktöre ait toplam de¤iflkenli- ¤i aç›klama oran›n›n ise %9.830 ve toplamda % 26.318 oldu¤unu göstermektedir. Sonuç: Bir grup üniversite ö¤rencisi ile yap›lan bu çal›flma Yafll›lara Yönelik Tutum Ölçe¤i’nin geçerli ve güvenilir oldu¤unu ortaya koymaktad›r.
