Abstract
Objective: To assess the relationship between levels of prolactin, gonadotropins and testosterone with semen analyses and the possible etiological role of hyperprolactinemia in sperm count abnormalities. Institution: Zeynep Kamil Women and Children’s Health Education and Research Hospital Department of Reproductive Endocrinology IVF Unit . Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty five males attending the our infertility and IVF clinics were studied. In all cases serum levels of FSH, LH, prolactin and testosterone and semen samples were analyzed. Patients were divided into four groups (Azoospermia, Oligozoospermia, Asthenozoospermia, Teratozoospermia) according to their sperm count, motility and morphology. Control group was normozoospermia. Serum hormon levels of control group were compared with the other groups levels. Serum levels of FSH, LH and testosterone in infertile men with hyperprolactinemia were compared with the same in infertile men with normal prolactin levels. Results: Mean serum prolactin and FSH concentrations were higher in azozoospermia group than controls (102.1±169.50 versus 9.40±2.94 ng/ml; p=0.016 and 12.46±12.18 mIU/ml vs 3.61±2.01 mIU/ml; p=0.003 respectively). There were no significant differences in mean LH and testosterone levels between two groups. A negative correlation was found between serum prolactin level and sperm count (r=-0.269; p=0,036; p
