Abstract
Having found favourable circumstances after the Ottoman defeat at the First World War, the Anatolian Greeks (Rum) endeavored to dismember the Ottoman Empire along the lines of the Megali Idea. In order to achieve their goal, the Rum established several societies that were supported by Greece and the Patriarchate. One of these societies was the Kordos Committee (Greek Immigrants Central Commission). The Committee transported Greeks from Russia and Greece to Thrace, Western Anatolia and Eastern Black Sea Region in order to increase the Greek speaking population and convince foreign commissions, whose the task was to investigate the ethnic distribution of the population in these regions, that Greeks were the majority of the population. Moreover, the Committee en- gaged in other activities such as massacring Muslims, confiscating Muslim property and provoking the Rum youth against the Muslim populace by the scout organizations that they established. The Committee undertook all these activities in secret cooperation with Greece and the Patriarchate. In this study, the foundation of the Kordos Committee, its activities and the precautions that the Ottoman Government took against it by relying on hitherto unexplored primary documentation from the Prime Ministry s Ottoman Archives in Istanbul are researched.
