Abstract
Background and design: The relationship between depression and alopecia areata, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis which have theirplaces among psychosomatic dermatoses, was investigated on 41 (6-12 years) old children suffering from these dermatoses, and was compared with children of the same age and sex but not suffering from any kind of dermatologic disorder. Results: Significant associations of depressive manifestations with psychosomatic dermatoses were found. Higher levels of anxiety were also associated with dermatoses on the same significance. The type of the dermatose did not differ tor the exitance of depressive manifestation. Conclusion: The level of these depressive manifestations pointed out a possible posttraumatic stress disorder, a masked depression or a distimic disorder rather than a major depressive episode. Whether depressive manifestations are the cause or the result of the dermatose has not ganied certainity.
