The effectiveness of contact cryotherapy in treatment of infantil hemangiomas

Abstract

Objective: Hemangiomas of infancy are the most common benign tumours of childhood. Cryotherapy is a widely accepted modality for the treatment of hemangiomas of the newborn. However, no studies clearly supporting its effectivity are available. In contrast to an earlier "wait and see" approach to treating hemangiomas in young children, we sought to determine whether these vascular lesions would respond to contact cryosurgery. Methods: Nineteen patients with 25 infantil hemangiomas were included in the study between 2003-2008 years.Patients were treated with contact cryotherapy. All lesions were treated with the same method (double freeze-thaw cycle of 15 seconds). Results: In 15 lesion; 11 (%73.3) lesions healed with full regression, two (%13.3) lesions healed with partially regression, one lession showed no change and one lesion showed progression.Conclusion: Contact cryotherapy has been evaluated as an effective and safe method in infantil hemangiomas.

Amaç: İnfantil hemanjiomlar çocukluk çağının en sık görülen benin tümörleridir. Kriyoterapi yenidoğanın hemanjiomlarında oldukça yaygın kabul gören bir yöntem olmasına rağmen bu konuda yeterli çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmada “bekle ve gör” yönteminin aksine kontakt kriyoterapinin infantil hemanjiomlar üzerine etkisini değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışmaya 2003-2008 yılları arasında infantil hemanjiom tanısı alan 19 hastanın 25 lezyonu dahil edildi. Çift donma-erime siklusu şeklinde 15 sn süre ile kontakt kriyoterapi uygulandı.Bulgular: Değerlendirilen 15 lezyonun 11’inde (%73.3) tam iyileşme, ikisinde kısmi iyileşme saptandı. Birinde cevap izlenmezken, bir lezyonda ilerleme gözlendi. Sonuç: Kontakt kriyoterapi infantil hemanjiomların tedavisinde uygulaması etkili ve güvenli bir yöntem olarak değerlendirilmiştir.
