Abstract

It is known that atherosclerosis is the main cause of mortality in many countries. There are many studies relevant to the role of blood lipids in atherosclerosis. Whereas the role of fatly acids in this disease is still controversial. It has been believed for a long time that polyunsaturated fatty acids protect from coroner artery disease (CAD). Recently it has been advised by some authors that to replace polyunsaturated fatly acids with monounsaturated fatty acids in diet is beneficial. In this study, we aimed to determine and compare the serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-, LDL-cholesterol, phospholipids together with saturated and unsaturated total fatty acid percentages in CAD diagnosed patients (Group A, n=30) and control group (Group B, n=28). We found higher levels of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and lower levels of HDL-cholesterol in CAD group in comparison with control group. In addition, serum total 14:0, 16:0, 18:1 fatty acids percentages were found to be higher and serum total 18:2 ω6 fatty acids lower in CAD group. There was a positive correlation between serum triglyceride and phospholipid levels, and serum total 14:0, 16:0, 16:1, 18:1 saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and a negative correlation between serum triglyceride and phospholipid levels and serum total 18:2 ω6 ve 20:4 ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in CAD group. In addition, there was a negative correlation between serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and serum 18:3 ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in CAD group. There was a positive correlation between serum HDL-cholesterol levels and 20:4 (.06 polyunsaturated fatty acids in CAD and control group. These data support the hypothesis that polyunsaturated fatty acids have an antiatherosclerotic effect through regulating the metabolism of blood lipids.
