Abstract

In this study, we investigated lipid peroxidation and resistance of plasma and red blood cells to oxidation in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. We separated 40 type II diabetic patients in two groups; one of the groups was formed from newly diagnosed patients (group 1, n-20), and the other was from the patients treated with oral antidiabetic agents (group 2, n=20). Control group was formed from 20 healthy normal subjects. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), resistance to oxidation and the erythrocyte MDA levels were measured. In addition, in these patients, fructosamine and HbA1c levels, the retrospective indicators of long term blood glucose levels, were determined. Serum MDA levels in group 1 (2,18 $pm$ 0,47 nmol/mL) and group 2 (2,52 ± 0,51 nmol/mL) were increased as compared to controls (1,52 ± 0,51 nmol/mL) and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p
