A questionnaire study related to anesthetic procedures conducted in patients during preanesthetic evaluation

Abstract

Aim: Anxiety related to anesthesia and surgery adversely affect operation and postoperative recovery. In this investigation a questionnaire study was conducted to reveal the knowledge level and degree of anxiety of the patients who were consulted to anesthesia clinic for sedation or anesthesia.Material and Methods: From the patients who referred to anesthesia polyclinic, we asked to fill a questionnaire consisting of 16 questions related to anesthesia. One thousand patients, aged between 18-95, were included in the study, and 86 of them could not complete the study for some reason. Results of 914 patients were evaluated. First part of the questionnaire included questions related to age, sex, education, occupation, anesthesia history, allergy history (personal knowledge), second part of the questionnaire included multiple choice questions related to anesthesia. In the second part of the questionnaire working place of anesthesiologist, methods of anesthesia, anxieties related to anesthesia were interrogated. Results: Questions related to education of patients showed that 25.5 % of them had a university education. Working status of patients showed that they were civil servants (24.7 %), housewives (19.1 %) and 19.1 % of them were retired. According to second part of the questionnaire, patients did’t have enough knowledge about the anesthesiologist, their working place, and type of anesthesia. And also, according to the results youngsters and young women feel more intense anxiety related to anesthesia than others. Conclusion: Our results showed that majority of patients had inadequate knowledge about anesthesia. According to us, it is accurate to spend more time with the patients and give them adequate verbal and written information.

Amaç: Anesteziye ve cerrahiye ait endişeler, operasyonu ve postoperatif iyileşmeyi olumsuz etkiler. Bu çalışmada operasyon veya sedasyon için anestezi polikliniğine başvuran hastalara anestezi hakkındaki bilgi ve endişelerinin ortaya konulması amacıyla bir anket düzenlenmiştir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Anestezi polikliniğine başvuran hastalardan 16 soruluk bir anket formunu doldurmaları istendi. Yaşları 18-95 arası toplam 1000 olguya uygulanan anketi çeşitli nedenlerden dolayı 86 hasta tamamlayamadı. Sonuçlar 914 olgu üzerinden değerlendirildi. İki bölümden oluşan anketin birinci bölümü yaş, cinsiyet, eğitim durumu, meslek, önceki anestezi deneyimi ve alerji öyküsü sorularından oluşan kişisel bilgiler içerirken, ikinci bölümde çoktan seçmeli anestezi soruları yer aldı. İkinci bölüm sorularıyla olguların anestezi doktorunun işlevleri, görev yerleri, anestezi yöntemleri hakkındaki bilgileri ve endişeleri sorgulandı. Bulgular: Ankete katılanların eğitim durumu sorgulanmasında en fazla yüzdeyi % 25,5 ile üniversite mezunları oluşturdu. Meslek sorgulamasında % 24,7 memur, % 19,1 ev hanımı, % 19,1 emekli şeklinde saptandı.İkinci bölüm sorularıyla olguların anestezi doktorunun işlevleri, görev yerleri, anestezi yöntemleri hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olmadıkları bulunurken, endişelerin kadın ve genç hasta grubunda yoğun olduğu saptandı.Sonuç: Hastalarımızın büyük kısmının anestezi bilimi hakkında eksik bilgiye sahip olduğu saptanmıştır. Hastalara daha çok zaman ayırarak sözel veya yazılı bilgilendirme yapılmasının doğru olacağını düşünüyoruz.
