Herbal usage in pediatric patiens, its importance in preanesthetic evaluation

Abstract

Aim: To determine the extent of herbal medicine use in children via preanesthetic evaulation Material and Method: A questionnaire was applied to the parents of 800 children who applied for preanesthetic evaluation before surgery. Results: During the study period between 2007 June and 2010 March, 32 % of the patients were using herbal medicine and 23 % were using another product. The most commonly used herbals were garlic, green tea, and urtica drocia. Conclusion: A total of 32 % of children had a current or past history of ingestion of herbal medicines. This finding may have implications for the perioperative management of children presenting for surgery.

Amaç: Çocuklarda preanestezik değerlendirmede herbal ilaç kullanımının sıklığının saptanması.Gereç ve Yöntem: Cerrahi girişim öncesi, anestezi polikliniğine başvuran 800 çocuk hastanın anne ve babalarına anket formu uygulanmıştır.Bulgular: Haziran 2007-Mart 2010 ayları arasında gerçekleştirilen çalışma da % 32 hastanın herbal ilaç kullandığı, % 23 oranında diğer ürünleri kullandığı saptanmıştır. Sık olarak kullanılan ürünler, sarımsak, yeşil çay ve ısırgan otudur.Sonuç: Çocuk hastaların % 32’in öyküsünde herbal ilaç kullanımı mevcuttur. Bu bulgular, çocuklarda peroperatif dönemde anestezi ve cerrahi yönetimi etkileyebilir.
