Abstract
The lungs have an important role in synthesis of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and there is not enough information concerning ACE level changes in patients with asthma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ACE levels of asthmatic patients. The study included 32 chronic mild or moderate asthmatic patients who were nonsmokers using beta-2 mimetic and steroid inhalers. Thirty-two healthy nonsmoker people were selected as controls. The ACE levels were measured according to a previous method using the substrate FAPGG. The serum ACE levels were measured as 132.8 ± 40.1 U/L (normal range: 98-108 U/L) in asthmatic patients and 102.6 ± 21.1 U/L in control group. Serum ACE levels were found to be significantly higher in patients having asthma than controls (p< 0.01). Further studies will help us to understand the mechanism of elevation of ACE levels in serum of asthmatic patients.
