The Prehistory of Modern City of God: Religion and Power in Christianity and Islam

Modern Tanrı-Devletin Tarihöncesi: Hıristiyanlık’ta ve İslam’da İktidar

Abstract

The relationship between religion and power in the history of Europe is one of the main foundations of the modern state. The political views and experiences of early Muslims stand in contrast to this modern concept of state, thereby requiring a new concept of religion to reconcile the two. In the pre-modern era, religion and power seem to be inseparable from one another, if observed within the framework of Talal Asad’s interpretation of the modern concept of religion and Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır’s comments on the premodern Christianity. The formation of the modern state and the specific relation it produces between the governing and governed bodies reproduces a certain unity of religion and power through a new concept of religion. The state constitutes a modern sacred pantheon and appears to have a divine faculty with the structure and reflexes that sanctify its institutional existence.

Özet

Din ve iktidar arasındaki ilişkinin Avrupa’daki serüveni modern devleti oluşturan ana temellerden biridir. Erken dönem Müslümanlığın siyaset anlayışı ve oluşturduğu tecrübeyle modern devlet fikrinin birbirine karşı duruşunun uzlaşısının sağlanması dinin yeniden tanımlanmasını zorunlu kılar. Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır’ın modern öncesi Hıristiyanlık tarihine ilişkin yorumu ve Talal Asad’ın modern din kavramına dair çıkarımları çerçevesinde modern öncesi dönemde din ve iktidarın ayrılmaz bir bütün olduğu görülmektedir. Modern devletin teşekkülü ve oluşturduğu yönetim-itaat anlayışı yeni bir din kavramı dolayımında din ve iktidarı bir bütün haline getirmektedir. Modern devlet, kurumsal varlığını yücelten ve kutsallaştıran yapısı ve refleksleriyle yasal-kutsal bir panteon oluşturmakta ve tanrısal bir fonksiyona bürünmüş görünmektedir.
