The effect of globalization on economic growth: Turkey case

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of economic and other types of globalization on the growth of the Turkish economy. The study results are crucial in terms of revealing the impact of globalization on economic growth. In the study, Turkey's economic and other globalization indices from 1970 to 2018 and GDP data were used. Since the series representing the variables are stationary at their first difference, Engle–Granger cointegration analysis was performed, and the error correction method was applied for the variables with cointegration. The causality relationships between the variables were examined with the Toda–Yamamoto method. According to the analysis, cointegration has been determined between economic globalization and economic growth. There is unidirectional causality from economic and commercial globalization to economic growth and economic growth to financial globalization and bidirectional causality between general globalization and economic growth. As a result, it has been revealed that economic globalization positively affects economic growth.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ekonomik ve diğer küreselleşme türlerinin Türkiye ekonomisinin büyümesine olan etkisini belirlemektir. Çalışmanın sonuçları küreselleşmenin ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkisini ortaya koyması bakımından önem arz etmektedir. Araştırmada, Türkiye’nin 1970–2018 dönemine ait ekonomik ve diğer küreselleşme endeksleri ile GDP (Gross Domestic Product) verileri kullanılmıştır. Değişkenleri temsil eden seriler birinci farklarında durağan oldukları için öncelikle Engle-Granger eş bütünleşme analizi yapılmış, eş bütünleşme belirlenen değişkenler için hata düzeltme yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Değişkenler arasındaki nedensellik ilişkileri TodaYamamoto yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Yapılan analizlere göre ekonomik küreselleşme ile ekonomik büyüme arasında eş bütünleşme belirlenmiştir. Ekonomik ve ticari küreselleşmeden ekonomik büyümeye ve ekonomik büyümeden finansal küreselleşmeye doğru tekyönlü, genel küreselleşme ile ekonomik büyümeye arasında ise çift yönlü nedensellik tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, ekonomik küreselleşme ekonomik büyümeyi olumlu yönde etkilediği belirlenmiştir.
