The Boundaries of Gezi: Notes on the economic and social relations in the urban neighborhoods

Abstract

During Gezi Park resistance the vivid demonstrations in the urban neighbour- hoods, most of which face the threat of urban renewal projects creating new formsof dispossession and dislocation, were not followed by strong and permanent fo- ra of debate and participation. This paper attempts to seek one reason behind thissilence in the social and economic relations deeply embedded in the daily life ofthe urban neighbourhoods undergoing a drastic transformation for the last thirtyyears. Against the background of the changing construction economy, power andclass relations, it aims to make a microscopic analysis of the attitudes, behaviours,habits and aspirations of individuals in their everyday practices. Both the secondary literature and ethnographic data based on the author s research and organising experience are used to suggest how certain modalities of power we protesttake their roots from our own reality. A self-reflexive recognition that we are boththe limit and possibility of our own emancipation in capitalist society is suggestedto inform both our everyday struggles and utopian perspective.

Özet

Gezi parkı direnişi, yeni mülksüzleşme ve yerinden etme biçimleri yaratan kentsel dönüşümün tehdidi altında olan pek çok mahallede canlı protestolara tanıklık etti. Ancak bu protestolar sonrasındaki mahalle forumları güçlü ve kalıcı olamadı. Buyazı, söz konusu sessizliğin olası nedenlerinden bazılarını son otuz yılda önemli dönüşümlere sahne olan mahalle yaşantısındaki ekonomik ve sosyal ilişkilerin içinde aramaya çalışıyor. Değişen inşaat ekonomisi, güç ve sınıf ilişkileri bağlamında mahallenin gündelik yaşantısındaki bireylerin tutum, davranış, alışkanlık ve özlemlerine etnografik bir gözle yakından bakmaya çalışıyor. Mevcut literatürdeki ve yazarın araştırma ve örgütlenme deneyimlerindeki bulgulara dayanan yazı, iktidarın hallerininnasıl olup da biraz da kendi gerçekliğimizden yapılı olduğunu anlamaya çalışıyor. Kapitalist toplumdaki özgürleşmenin hem imkanı hem de sınırı olduğumuza dair eleştirel bir farkındalığın güncel mücadelelerimizi ve ütopik ufkumuzu geliştirebileceğinin altı çiziliyor.
