Abstract

Menāqibnāme literature holds a special importance in studies on the history of Sufism. This genre documents the lives and thoughts of influential historical Sufi figures and comes right after their own works in terms of providing reliable scholarly materials regarding their legacy. In this article, we focus on the mystical personality of Sheikh Sha bān Valī (d. 976/1569), a 16 th century Ottoman Sufi figure lived in Anatolia. The Sheikh was a noteworthy member of the Khalwatiyya Sufi order. At the same time, he is considered to be the founder of the Sha bāniyya, a branch of the Khalwatiyya named after him. Omer Fuādī (d. 1046/1636), a member of this Sufi order, wrote a comprehensive Menāqibnāme about the Sheikh and entitled it Menāqib-i Sheikh Sha bān Valī. On the basis of this work, in this article, we analyze the life and thoughts of the Sheikh Sha bān Valī.
