The Metal Workers and the Sumerian Word LuSIMUG.A as Mentioned in the Hittite Cuniform Tablets

Abstract

I thought ,when I began to work on my Ph.D. thesis Iron in the Light of Boğazköy Cuneiform Tablets during the Hittite Age, that it had to be naturally an indispensible part of my research to deal with the iron simiths of that time. Accordigly having looked up the names given by the Hittites to these artificers in the proper dictionaries, I came to the conclusion that LUSIMUG.A could have been the word used for blacksimiths. But as my research proceeded, this idea did not seem to be satisfying. It appeared to me that this could be a collective word and therefore could include also the other metal workers. Now having taken in cosideration the works done in this field since that time, I reviewed my research on the works and functions of thsese artifiers. This research is in a sense to correct the mistake done in the thesis.

Özet

Doktora çalışmamızın başlığı 'Çiviyazılı Boğazköy Kaynaklarına Göre Hititler Devrinde Demir' olarak belirlenmişdi. Böyle bir çalışmada kuşkusuz demirci sanatkarının da önemli bir yer tutması gerekiyordu ve bu sanatkar gurubunun adının konuyla ilgili sözlüklere LUSIMUG.A olarak geçtiğini gördük. Ancak sonraları bunun doğru olmadığı görüldü. Söz konusu meslek gurubunun genel olarak 'Metal işleyicisi' olarak adlandırmak gereği ortaya çıktı. Biz günümüze kadar bu konudaki çalışmalarıda gözönüne alarak bu meslek gurubunun işlevlerini yeniden araştırdık.
