Abstract
It s observed that throughout history and in almost all societies, there have been a belief and knowledge regarding the dog as a special relation to human being. This can partly be explained in the fact that the dog has always been the closest animal to mankind, this already stated in several written sources and archaeological scripts since the oldest period. The history of dogs and their special relation to human beings began when the dog became domesticated and started to live close with human beings. One of the special roles the dog had was to play a protective part. This is indicated in the many corpses that have been buried together with a dog and the numerous of dog skeletons have been found in human graves. They believed dogs did not only protect the living ones but continued their mission to protect the human also in his after death. The written sources and archeological scripts of the Ancient Mesopotamian societies provide interesting information about the dog as an animal with healing and protective power. Indeed dogs were depicted along with the healing goddesses and the use of their salvia and feces as an item of healing in therapies emphasizes that dog was perceived as healers. Furthermore the dog figurines unearthed in the excavations conducted in the temples and dedicated to the healing goddesses indicate they were considered as item of protection against evil spirits.
