The Rise ofAir Power and Principles ofWar

Abstract

Technological developments in warfare weapons and equipment, the differentiation in the perception of threat have forced to change the type of the war and expanded the operation area where it is executed. Air and Space power can globally conduct campaign without any area constraints and without neither need for frontier nor demand for area in theater. It can choose anywhere on the earth as a theater according to political goals, thanks to its range and speed capabilities. Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns showed that preventing effects of oceans and seas couldn’t degrade the success of air power. When compared to surface forces air and space power exposed to low risk due to third dimension of operation area where it conducts operations and high tech weapons. In this article, we examined the operations conducted in the 21st century by chronological order and the contributions of air and space power to modern warfare by considering principles of war. It is concluded from the study that manned and unmanned platforms, long-range smart weapons and well trained personnel of air and space power have increased the implementation of principles of war in modern warfare

Özet

Harp silah ve araçlarındaki teknolojik gelişmeler ile tehdit algısında yaşanan farklılaşma, harbin şeklini değiştirmiş ve harekât alanını genişletmiştir. Hava ve uzay gücü; dünyanın her noktasında kullanılabilen, aynı sınırı paylaşma veya harekât alanında bir bölgeye sahip olma gerekliliğine ihtiyaç duymayan bir kuvvettir. Sahip olduğu menzil ve sürat yetenekleri sayesinde politik hedefe katkı sağlayacak şekilde tüm dünya coğrafyasını kendine harp alanı olarak seçebilmektedir. Libya, Irak ve Afganistan harekâtları okyanusların ve denizlerin günümüz harplerinde engel olma özelliklerini yitirdiğini göstermiştir. Hava ve uzay gücü harekât ortamının üçüncü boyutunu ve yüksek teknolojiyi kullanarak satıh güçlerine oranla daha az riske maruz kalmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, XXI. yüzyılda icra edilen askerî operasyonlarile hava ve uzay gücünün harekât ortamına getirdiği yenilikler, harp prensipleri dikkate alınarak tarihsel dizin içinde incelenmiştir. Hava ve uzay gücü sahip olduğu insanlı ve insansız platformlar, uzun menzilli akıllı mühimmat seçenekleri ve eğitimli personeliyle harekât ortamında harp prensiplerinin uygulanabilirliğini artırmıştır
