Abstract

The events that have started as civilian protests in Syria during March 2011 quickly intensified and violently turned into a multidimensional and multiactor civil war with the marked influence of instability in neighboring Iraq. Al-Nusra Front is one of those actors which operate as the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda. Upon publicly declaring their existence in January 24, 2012, the organization became one of the most effective opposition groups. Al-Qaeda style terrorist attacks carried out by the Al-Nusra Front caused the moderate opposition to lose ground, and strengthened Assad's hand who argued that he was fighting to protect the country against "terrorists". Ironically, as Al-Nusra fought the enemy it set to destroy, the more it actually strengthened it. While The Al-Nusra Front fights with its enemy, it ironically makes its enemy stronger. Moreover, the longer the current regime stayed in power, its social base has broadened. This branch of Al-Qaeda which is viewed as the most dangerous threat by the US and the West turned into a vital support for the initially weakened Syrian Regime . Bombings of coalition forces led by the US as a response to ISIS terrorist attacks, AlNusra front have also been targeted and affected at times. The coalition's intervention have changed the situation in Syria and the weakening of moderate opposition groups have rendered the current regime more "acceptable" compared to other alternatives. International community and regional powers' attitude will determine the future of Syria in the ever changing Middle Eastern political system

Suriye'de 2011 Mart ayında halk hareketleri şeklinde başlayan olaylar kısa sürede şiddetlenerek iç savaşa doğru evrilmiş ve komşu Irak'taki istikrarsızlığında etkisiyle çok boyutlu, çok aktörlü bir sorun haline gelmiştir. Ülkedeki aktörlerden bir tanesi de El Kaide'nin Suriye kolu olarak faaliyet gösteren El Nusra Cephesi'dir. Varlığını 24 Ocak 2012'de resmen ilan eden örgüt, sonrasında en etkili muhalif gruplardan biri haline gelmiştir. El Nusra Cephesi, yaptığı El Kaide tarzı eylemlerle "ılımlı muhalifler"e zemin kaybettirmiş ve "teröristlerle savaşıyorum" diyen Beşşar Esad'ın elini güçlendirip rejime zaman kazandırmıştır. El Nusra Cephesi, ironik bir biçimde düşmanıyla savaştıkça düşmanını güçlendirmiştir. Bunun tersi olarak, mevcut rejim kaldığı sürece, kendi sosyal tabanını genişletmiştir. ABD özelinde Batı toplumu tarafından en büyük tehlike olarak görülen El Kaide'nin kolu olan örgüt, bu şekilde, ilk başlarda zayıflayan Suriye rejimine IŞİD ile birlikte adeta koltuk değneği olmuştur. Zeminin son derece kaygan olduğu Ortadoğu coğrafyasında bölge ülkelerinin ve uluslararası toplumun tavrı Suriye'nin geleceğinde etkili olacak, bu durum da El Nusra Cephesi'nin geleceğinde belirleyici olacaktır
