Abstract

Objective: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most common health problems in employees. In this study, we aimed to determine the complaints of the upper extremity musculoskeletal system and the factors causing these complaints of the automation secretaries working in our hospital. ( Sakarya Med J., 2018, 8(2):432-441 ). Materials and Methods In our cross-sectional study, it was aimed to reach 167 secretaries working in our hospital. In October-November 2017, 143 secretaries (94.0%) were interviewed. The personal characteristics of the employee, the work and the working environment were questioned by 30-question questionnaire form compiled from the literature. An expanded version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to determine the frequency of upper extremity complaints. Chi-square, Student’s t test and logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results 25,2% of participants (36) were excluded from the analysis because they had a known musculoskeletal system disorder (n = 107). It was determined that 67,6% of the participants had complaints in the neck area, 47,7% in the shoulder area and 32,1% in the hand-wrist area in the last 12 months. Logistic regression analysis showed that working on the computer without a break for 4 hours or more and working on a chair with non-adjustable height was a risk factor for shoulder area complaints, working intensively was a risk factor for hand-wrist area complaints and working longer in the profession was a risk factor for upper extremity complaints. Conclusion In order to prevent complaints of upper extremity which may be caused by work in secretaries, employees should use effective and suffi - cient time of break and work environments should be ergonomically reorganized.
