TRADE AND COMPETITION IN OTTOMAN BALKAN: MERCHANTS OF DUBROVNIK IN RUMELI (1600-1630)

Abstract
The Ragusan merchants who had connections with local merchants and raw material producers in Rumaliancities by the trade agencies or directly by themselves had to compete with local rulers, local merchants,Venetians and Jewish brokers in the first quarter of the XVII.th century. Venice s attempts to make Spilatoport as an arrival point for the trade caravans which come from Balkans caused the reaction of Dubrovnikbut these reactions did not prevent the rise of the port. Jews embarked a ruthless struggle in order not togive rein of the control of local market to Dubrovniks. The economic changes which were occurred at thebeginning of 17th century directly affected the Dubrovnik. This little city state s competition with British,Dutch or French traders obviously cannot be expected. At the best it could integrate local/regional tradecircumstances. Therefore this study will be an effort to portray how successful the Dubrovnik merchantswere at Rumeli.

XVII. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde ticaret acentaları ya da bizzat kendilerinin kurdukları şirketler vasıtasıyla Rumelişehirlerinde yerel tüccarlarla ve hammadde üreticileriyle irtibat kuran Raguzalı tüccarlar, yerel idareciler,yerel tüccarlar, Venedikliler ve Yahudi aracılar ile rekabet etmek durumunda kaldılar. Venedikin Spilatolimanını Balkanlardan gelen ticaret kervanlarının varış noktası yapma girişimleri Dubrovnikin tepkisiniçektiyse de bu limanın yükselişi engellenemedi. Yahudiler ise yerel piyasayı Dubrovniklilere kaptırmamakiçin kıyasıya bir mücadeleye giriştiler. XVII. yüzyıl başlarında Akdenizde meydana gelen ekonomikdeğişimler, Dubrovniki doğrudan etkiledi. Bu küçük şehir devletinin İngiliz, Hollandalı ya da Fransıztüccarlarıyla rekabet etmesi beklenemezdi. Olsa olsa yerel/bölgesel ticaret şartlarına uyum sağlayabilirlerdi.Bu nedenle bu çalışma Dubrovnikli tüccarların Rumelide ne kadar başarılı olduklarını tasvir etme gayretininürünü olacaktır.
