Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century the Ottoman Empire having experienced problems on political stability and economics was also dealing with the interventions of the European states. One of these intervention methods was to carry out the scientific studies in different fields in the territory of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman administration tried to keep these scientific studies carried out in line with the political and economic interests of the relevant states under control. One of these states was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Geologist Franz Xaver Schaffer (1876-1953), who was the director of the Vienna Natural History Museum in 1923-24, was one of the figures who participated in these researches in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. Between 1900 and 1917, he conducted geological research in a wide region in the territory of the Ottoman Empire from Aleppo to Ioannina. However, these scientific studies have also been used to expand the economic and political sphere of influence of industrialized countries. These studies of Schaffer were supported by institutions and organizations such as the Vienna Academy of Sciences and the Baghdad Railway Company. In this article, it is intended to give information about Schaffer's scientific researches in important places in terms of railways and mineral deposits in a wide area from Aleppo to Ioannina, from Izmir to Zonguldak within the borders of the Ottoman Empire and to put forth the connection of these scientific studies with the political and economic interest groups of the period.
