Abstract
This study deals with the 17th-century sûfî Melāyē Jizīrī (Mullah Ahmad al-Jazīrī)’s interpretation about the samāʿ. Melāyē Jizīrī comprehensively cognizant of the Muslim sufī thought (as chiefly represented by Ibn ʿArabī) concerning the theoretical and practical aspects of the samāʿ, and he expounded on four practices of it. These are “the ontological samaʿ”, “the cosmological samāʿ”, “the spiritual samāʿ” and “the natural samāʿ”. Since Jizīrīi treats the matters of existence in a hierarchy from top to bottom, he followed the same hierarchy regarding the matter of the samāʿ. According to him, samāʿ is the dancing and whirling of the sufī due to the ecstasy occurring as a result of the reflection of the divine rhythms and melodies in his heart. It may therefore be stated that the samāʿ forms an important part of Melāyē Jizīrī’s thought about tasawwuf
