THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF TRANSPORTATION AND TOURISM COMPANIES: AN APPLICATION IN BORSA ISTANBUL (BIST)

Abstract
At the end of 2019, Covid-19 has quickly spread and become a global pandemic, leading to political,economic, and social consequences. The transportation and tourism industry has become one of themost adversely affected industries by the Covid-19 pandemic due to the implementation of lockdown,travel restrictions as well as suspension of domestic and international flights. This study examines theimpact of Covid-19 on the financial performance of transportation and tourism using the method ofratio analysis. The research sample of the study covers the companies that operate in the transportationand tourism industry and listed in the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Transportation and Tourism Index. Thestudy results show that Covid-19 has a significant impact on the financial ratios of transportation andtourism companies, except for liquidity ratios. According to the research findings, while Covid-19 hasincreased the companies’ financial risks, it has led to a sharp decrease in profitability.
Özet
2019’un sonunda, Covid-19 hızla yayılarak politik, ekonomik ve sosyal sonuçlara neden olan küreselbir salgın haline gelmiştir. Ulaştırma ve turizm sektörü, sokağa çıkma yasağı, seyahat kısıtlamaları, içve dış hat uçuşlarının ertelenmesi gibi uygulamalar nedeniyle Covid-19 salgınından en çok etkilenensektörlerden birisi olmuştur. Bu çalışma, oran analizi yöntemini kullanarak Covid-19’un ulaştırmave turizm işletmelerinin finansal performansına olan etkisini incelemektedir. Çalışmanın örneklemi,ulaştırma ve turizm sektörlerinde faaliyet gösteren ve Borsa İstanbul (BİST) Ulaştırma ve TurizmEndeksinde yer alan işletmeleri kapsamaktadır. Çalışma sonuçları, Covid-19’un ulaştırma ve turizmişletmelerinin likidite oranları dışında finansal oranları üzerinde önemli bir etki oluşturduğunu göstermiştir.Araştırma bulgularına göre Covid-19 işletmelerin finansal risklerini artırırken, kârlılıkta belirginbir düşüşe neden olmuştur.
