TURKISH MODERNIZATION: FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE ENEMY IDENTITY CRISIS CREATED BY MODERNIZATION

TÜRK MODERNLEŞMESİ: DÜŞMANINA ÂŞIK OLMAK MODERNLEŞMENIN OLUŞTURDUĞU KIMLIK BUNALIMI

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze Turkish Modernization by taking historical development stages into consideration and emphasizing that the identity crisis arose from modernization. Turkish modernization splits into two phases as Ottoman modernization and Republican modernization that diverge from each other and also complement each other. The pioneers of Ottoman modernization are the bureaucrats who rest on sacred state notion. According to the bureaucrats who act from pragmatic/utilitarian perspective rather than moral and cultural values, westernization is the crucial path to follow if it ensures the permanence of the state. Westernization for Ottoman bureaucrats was a plan to save the state, while for the Republican bureaucrats it was a project of creating a new nation, building a new social identity and transforming culture and mentality. Unlike the societies where there is no direct conflict, despite defining and defeating West as an enemy for four hundred years, modeling the Western civilization brings with it a great problem of refraction and identity for the Turkish society.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı Türk modernleşmesini,tarihsel gelişim evrelerini dikkate alarakçözümlemek ve modernleşmenin doğurduğukimlik probleminin vurgulamasıdır. Türk modernleşmesiOsmanlı ve Cumhuriyet modernleşmesiolarak hem birbirini tamamlayan hem debirbirinden ayrışan iki evreye ayrılır. Osmanlımodernleşmesinin öncüleri, “kutsal devlet anlayışı”ndan beslenen bürokratlardır. Ahlaki vekültürel değerlerden çok pragmatik/faydacı birbakış açısıyla hareket eden bürokratlara göre,devletin bekasını sağlayacaksa batılılaşma izlenmesigereken zorunlu yoldur. Osmanlı bürokratlarıiçin Batılılaşma, devleti kurtarma projesiiken, Cumhuriyet bürokratları için yeni bir ulusyaratma, yeni bir toplumsal kimlik inşa etme,kültürü ve zihniyeti dönüştürme projesidir. Batıile doğrudan bir çatışma yaşamayan toplumlaranazaran dört yüz yıl düşman olarak tanımlayıpsavaştığı Batı medeniyetini modellemek, galipkenmağlup olmak, Türk toplumu için büyükbir kırılma ve kimlik problemini de beraberindegetirir.
