Analysing A coursebook used for teaching Turkish and introducing Turkey to German soldiers

Alman Askerlerine Türkçeyi öğretme ve Türkiye'yi tanıtma amacıyla yazılan bir kitabın incelenmesi

Abstract

In this study, the book Praktisches Türkisches Lehrbuch (Practical Turkish Coursebook) used in teaching Turkish at the Department of Oriental Languages in Berlin Friedrich Wilhelm University is analysed in terms of the language teaching methodology, information about the country and cultural transmission. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the book was written by considering the possible communicative situations that the German soldiers who were to take charge in Turkey during World War I would encounter in daily and professional lives in Turkey and that it had some of basic features of grammar-translation and direct methods. The book which was written in 1916 has some striking features. One of these is that Arabic and Persian grammars, which were considered almost a prerequisite in Turkish teaching during that period, do not take place in this book and in spite of those who oppose writing Turkish in Latin characters, all the exercises and reading texts which were written in Arabic were given along with their transcriptions in Latin characters. Another remarkable feature of this book is that information about Turkey and Turkish culture is included to a great extent in teaching the language. This information is related to social life in Turkey and military encompassing transpor- tation, accommodation, shopping, food, clothing, duties of the soldiers in the Ottoman army in relation to the military ranks and the commands given in training etc. The book in this respect is almost a small guidebook of Turkey. As a result, considering the social, historical and foreign language teaching related scientific conditions of the period, it can be seen that the book was written with an innovative approach in terms of its method and content and appropriateness for the target group.

Bu çalışmada, Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında Berlin Friedrich Wilhelm Üniversitesi Doğu Dilleri Enstitüsünde Türkçenin öğretiminde kullanılan Praktisches Türkisches Lehrbuch adlı ders kitabı; dil öğretim yöntemi, ülke bilgisi ve kültür aktarımı açısından incelenmiştir. İnceleme sonunda, kitabın Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında Türkiyede görev alacak Alman askerlerin günlük ve mesleki yaşamlarında karşılaşacakları muhtemel iletişim alanları dikkate alınarak hazırlandığı ve dil bilgisi-çeviri ile düzvarım yöntemlerinin temel özelliklerini taşıdığı saptanmıştır. 1916 yılında basılan bu kitabın dikkat çekici bazı özellikleri bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan biri, o dönemde Türkçenin öğretiminde neredeyse ön koşul kabul edilen Arapça ve Farsça dil bilgisinin bu kitapta yer almaması ve Türkçenin Latin harfleriyle yazılmasına karşı çıkanlara rağmen kitapta Arap harfleriyle verilen tüm alıştırma ve okuma metinlerinin Latin harfli transkripsiyonlarıyla birlikte verilmesidir. Kitabın belirgin bir diğer özelliği, Türkiye ve Türk kültürünü tanıtıcı bilgilerin yoğun bir şekilde dil öğretimine dâhil edilmesidir. Bu bilgiler, Türkiyedeki günlük sosyal yaşama ve askeri alana yönelik olup, ulaşım, barınma, alışveriş, yeme içme, giyim kuşam, Osmanlı ordusundaki askerlerin rütbelere göre görevleri, talimlerde verilen emirler vb. konuları kapsamaktadır. Kitap bu özelliği ile adeta bir kılavuz gibidir. Sonuç olarak, yazıldığı dönemin tarihsel, toplumsal ve yabancı dil öğretimi ile ilgili bilimsel koşulları göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, kitabın gerek yöntem ve içerik gerekse hedef grubuna uygunluk bakımından yenilikçi bir yaklaşımla yazıldığı görülmektedir.
