Abstract

Social practices and rituals are open to change as they are dynamic. One of the rituals that has undergone changes in recent times is the sash that is tied to the waist of the bride before she leaves her father’s house. In this study, especially after the 2000s, the reason why some brides do not want to wear sashes or prefer a different colour other than red was questioned. It is asserted that the bride’s sash, which is described as the virginity sash, does not mean virginity. It actually refers abundance, fertility, and a status the transition from being single to marriage. In the study, after mentioning the etymology of the sash with its place and importance in Turkish culture, the reasons for the rejection of the tradition were discussed by giving examples from the oral, written and second oral culture environment. The bride’s belt, which is described by names such as father’s custody, sibling sash, effort sash, the sash of Fatima mother, the sash of puissance, power belt, waist shawl, prophet belt, virginity tie, teğbet, şutik, lineage sash etc., is more commonly expressed as virginity sash today. It has been determined that this action which is stated as unbelting or tying, previously referred to a belief and cultural code that the bride will bring abundance and good luck to her place (home or family), but now this belief has been forgotten over time and has turned into a perception of virginity due to the red colour of the belt/ribbon/sash. This situation inevitably draws the subject to the focus of feminist debates. Virginity is an important phenomenon in the history of Turkish culture, and it is known that there are some rituals around it. However, it is understood that associating the bride’s sash with virginity is a new and widespread misconception. In fact, the sash called as “kuşak” in Turkish derived from the Turkish word root “kur” which means “seed, progeny, yeast, generation etymologically that also refers to the fertility and reproduction of women or men, in other words, abundance. The practice of tying sash, especially on the waist of a woman, highlights the expectation of fertility from the bride. For this purpose, it is seen that a sash was tied around the waist of both the bride and groom in the past. While the colour and material of the bridal belt appear in different colours and forms in the Turkish clothing history, it has been determined that the sash has been reduced to a single model as a red ribbon over time. This red colour has been associated with the virginity loss or virginity blood. This perception brought along the reaction of marginal brides who refused to tie a red sash within the social/collective memory. Thus, the ritual has gained a negative connotation in its own meaning. Additionally, the red sash is associated with virginity in studies published especially after the 1980s in Turkey shows that this perception started to turn into social acceptance later on. In order to reveal this deterioration, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the people who are the practitioners of the ritual, and also selling wedding dresses and accessories in 2019. As a result of the field research, it has been determined that all of the informants associate the red sash with virginity, and also all of the wedding dressmakers sell the sash under the name of the virginity belt. It has been specified that this ritual, which brings with the gender discussions, is largely preserved within the general acceptance of the society, but has recently tended to be rejected depending on the education level, economic situation and social environment especially in the urban life. It is possible to bring an effective solution for this seemingly degenerate tradition by presenting it to academy and by making use mass media. Filming a documentary highlighting the code of fertility and abundance, that existing at the root of the tradition, and including similar messages on TV series and movies will raise awareness in the society. In addition, if the ritual is applied with a sash which can be named as lineage belt or abundance sash instead of the virginity sash, and wedding dressmakers sell the sash with these new names, many negative meanings of the rituals can be extinguished. This change can both prevent the rejection of tradition by degeneration, and the ritual will not be criticized in the context of gender in the popular culture with the renamed sash in accordance with cultural codes.
