The Level of Importance and the Degree of Achievement of Learning outcomes in the Science and Technology Curriculum

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to put forward the opinions of the in-service elementary teachers at 4th and 5th grades of the pilot schools and the third year pre-service teachers at Elementary Teacher Education department at Kocaeli University about learning outcomes in Science and Technology Curriculum. For the study, the learning outcomes about “(1) Living things and life, (2) the object and the evolution, and (3) Physical events, (4) the world and the universe were transformed to a 5 point Likert- type scale as a data collection tool. In the scope of this research the opinions of the 4th and 5th grade elementary teachers in 15 pilot schools in which Science and Technology curriculum were studied and 3rd grade pre-service elementary teachers at Kocaeli University. At the end of the research, it was understood that both in-service and pre-service teachers stated the learning outcomes as “very important” and “highly achieved” for in-service teachers and “highly achievable” for pre-service teachers. Learning outcomes stated as “partly achieved” or “partly achievable” in the 4th and 5th grade curriculum were generally related to developing a material, suggesting a method, creating and presenting a model, designing and practicing an experiment, which means practicing the knowledge.

Özet

Bu çalışma, fen ve teknoloji programındaki kazanımlara yönelik pilot okullardaki uygulama öğretmenlerinin ve Kocaeli Üniversitesi Sınıf Öğretmenliği 3. sı- nıf öğrencilerinin görüşlerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla (1) Canlı lar ve Hayat, (2) Madde ve Değişim, (3) Şziksel Olaylar, (4) Dünya ve Evren ile ilgili kazanımlar 5’li likert tipi ölçeğe dönüştürülerek veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada Kocaeli ilindeki yeni programın uygulandığı 15 pilot okulda görev yapan 4. ve 5. sınıf öğretmenlerinin ve Kocaeli Üniversitesi Sınıf Öğ- retmenliği Programı 3. Sınıfta okuyan öğrencilerin görüşleri alınmıştır. Araştırma sonunda, hem öğretmenler hem de Eğitim Fakültesi öğrencileri tarafından kazanımların “çok önemli” olarak algılandığı; öğretmenler açısından “büyük oranda gerçekleştirildi”, öğrenciler açısından da “büyük oranda gerçekleştirilebilir” şeklinde ifade edildiği görülmektedir. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin ve Eğitim Fakültesi öğrencilerinin “kısmen” gerçekleştirildiğini/ gerçekleştirilebileceğini düşündükleri kazanımların materyal geliştirme, yöntem önerme, model oluşturma ve sunma, deney tasarlama, deney yapma gibi daha çok bilgiyi uygulamaya yönelik kazanımlar olduğu görülmektedir. Her iki grup da bu kazanımları çok önemli bulmalarına karşın “kısmen” gerçekleştirilebileceğini düşünmektedirler.
