The Comparision of Attitudes of Elemantary School Teachers and Prospective Elemantary School Teachers Towards Geography Course

Sınıf Öğretmenlerinin ve Sınıf Öğretmeni Adaylarının Coğrafya Konularına Yönelik Görüşlerinin Karşılaştırılması

Abstract

Knowledge and competencies of the elementary school teachers and their attitudes towards geography are very important as the elementary school students receive the first formal information about geography from their elementary school teachers. The aim of this study is to find out the attitudes of prospective elementary school teachers and elementary school teachers working at public schools. The sample of the study consists of 95 prospective elementary school teachers at Dumlupinar University Education Faculty and 192 elementary school teachers at public schools in Kutahya. An attitude scale developed by the researchers was used as a data gathering instrument. As a result of the study done, no significant difference was found between the teachers’ attitudes towards the geograhy course in terms of gender, length of service, and the school of graduation. In addition, it was found out that elementary school teachers held relatively more positive attitudes towards geography courses compared to their prospective counterparts.

Özet

İlköğretim kademesinde öğrencilere formal olarak ilk coğrafya bilgilerini sınıf öğretmenleri kazandıracağı için, onların bu konudaki bilgileri, yeterlilikleri ve olumlu görüşleri son derece önemlidir. Bu araşmanın amacı, sınıf öğretmeni adaylarının ve MEB’e bağlı devlet okullarında görev yapan sınıf öğretmenlerinin program bazında coğrafya konularına yönelik görüşlerinin belirlenmesidir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi İlköğ retim Bölümü Sınıf Öğretmenliği Anabilim Dalına devam eden 95 öğretmen adayı ve Kütahya il merkezindeki devlet okullarında görev yapan 192 sınıf öğ- retmeni oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen coğrafya konularına yönelik bir anket kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, öğretmenlerin coğrafya konularına yönelik görüşlerinde cinsiyet, mesleki kıdem ve mezun olunan okula göre anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. Ayrıca sınıf öğretmen adaylarına nazaran sınıf öğretmenlerinin coğrafya konularına yönelik olarak kısmen daha olumlu görüş sergiledikleri tespit edilmiştir.
