Abstract

While contributing to the quality of education process with their knowledge, skills and attitudes, teachers are responsible for making the students gain the behaviors included in the education programme, through the methods, techniques and strategies they use. This responsibility ensures the enhancement of students’ abilities. Apart from such difficult occupational requirements of the teaching profession, it becomes even more difficult when the group they address have some different characteristics. Gifted children are different from their other classmates in potential with regards to their learning speed/depth and the interests they have. This situation necessitates the teachers to have different characteristics and proficiencies. In Turkey, the general proficiencies of the teaching profession were identified as, “Personal and Professional Values, Knowing the Child, Teaching and Learning Process, Monitoring and Evaluation, School, Family and Society Relations, Programme and Content Information,” under the heading “Teacher Education,” which is one of the components of the Ministry of Education Support to Basic Education Project in 2006. Based on that, the proficiencies and characteristics the teachers to train gifted children should have were formed based on such considerations.
