Abstract

This study aims to determine the Turkish society’s usage level of basic map skills such as finding directions and positioning by taking into account the gender, age group, education level and occupation differences. Other aim of this study is also to reveal the society’s perception of geography and geography education. Participants were asked cardinal direction, location and map questions by a survey. The answers were analyzed using SPSS 17.0 software. The results indicated that the society’s map skills including finding cardinal direction and location, showing major countries, cities and districts are considerably inadequate. The results also pointed out that the map skills being taught in different curricula for many years are not used effectively in daily life. Most of the participants have information about the study area the science of geography. However, they have a strong opinion that geography is not given enough importance in Turkey and the geography education is not sufficient.

Özet

Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de toplumdaki yön ve konum bulma gibi temel harita becerilerinin ne düzeyde yerleşmiş olduğunu cinsiyet, yaş grubu, eğitim seviyesi ve meslek durumu farklılıkları ile birlikte belirlemek amacı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Toplumun coğrafya bilimi ve coğrafya eğitimine bakış açılarının ortaya çıkarılması da çalışmanın diğer bir amacını oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada, İstanbul’un Bahçelievler, Bakırköy ve Fatih ilçelerinde ikamet eden toplam 300 kişiye anket yöntemi ile yön, konum, harita kullanımı ve coğrafyaya bakış açıları ile ilgili çeşitli sorular yöneltilmiştir. Alınan cevapların SPSS paket programı ile analiz edilmesi sonucunda, katılımcıların yön bulma, harita üzerinde kendi konumunu bulabilme, tarif edebilme ve çeşitli ülke, il ve ilçeleri gösterebilme becerilerinin düşük olduğu görülmüştür. Bu durum uzun yıllar çeşitli öğretim programlarında yer verilen harita becerilerinin pratik hayata yeteri kadar yansıtılamadığını ortaya çıkarmıştır. Ayrıca, Coğrafya bilimi toplum tarafından önemli ölçüde tanınmaktadır. Ancak toplumun büyük çoğunluğu Türkiye’de coğrafya bilimine yeterli ölçüde değer verilmediğini ve coğrafya eğitiminin yetersiz olduğunu düşünmektedir.
