Abstract
Steel slag is a by-product formed during the manufacture of steel. It has a complex chemical structure comprising of oxides and silicates formed by the oxidation of impurities within the steel.The steel slag contains a proportion of uncombin (free) lime and magnesia which expands in the presence of moisture but when handled correctly this material can be converted into a high quality road construction aggregate. Steel slag aggregate is accepted in many ste dards internationally for the production of both unbou and coated road construction material. Due to itsexcellent physical and mechanical properties it is actus specified in some circumstances for the production surfacing materials which exhibit superior performan characteristics to those of existing natural aggregates. By utilising steel slag in this way the construction industry benefit from a high specification aggregate and the environment benefit from reducing landfill and the conservation of the natural resources.

Çelik cürufu çelik üretimi esnasında oluşan bir yan üründür. Çelik yapısındaki safsızlıkların oksitlenmesi ile oluşan silikat ve oksitleri kapsayan bir kompleks kimyasal yapıdır. Çelik cürufu, nemli ortamda genleşir yapı gösteren ancak uygun yöntemler kullanılarak yüksek kalitede yapım agregasına dönüştürülebilen belli oranlarda serbest kireç ve magnesia içeriğine sahiptir. Çelik cüruf agregası, bir çok uluslararası standardta serbest veya kaplanmış yol yapım malzemesi olarak kabul görmektedir. Mükemmel fiziksel ve mekanik özellikleri sayesinde bazı durumlarda, günümüzde kullanılan doğal agrega malzemesinden çok daha üstün karekteristik özeliğe sahip yüzey malzemesi üretimlerinde rağbet görmektedir. Çelik cürufunun bu yöntemle değerlendirilmesi ile hem inşaat endüstrisinin bu üstün nitelikteki malzeme¬den çıkar elde etmesi sağlayacak, hem de doğal kaynakların korunması ve kullanılabilir potansiyel arazilerin doldurulmasının azaltılması ile çevresel açıdan büyük faydalar elde edilmiş olacaktır.
