The interpretation of the concepts of space and time in newtonian and relativistic physics in the framework of reichenbach s epistemology

Abstract

The concepts of space and time in physics and philosophy have been one of the major problem areas from the Ancient times until today. In this text we analyzed Reichenbach s interpretation of the concepts of space and time in Newtonian physics and in Einstein s theory of relativity. For our purpose, we firstly investigated the Reichenbach s philosophy of space and time, and revealed fundamental concepts of Reichenbach s epistemology. Then we tried to compare the concepts of space and time between Newtonian physics and Einstein s theory of relativity. In the light of this research, we tried to give the evaluation of the concepts of space and time in terms of Reichenbach s epistemology.

Özet

Uzay ve zaman kavramları, Antik Çağdan günümüze kadar fiziğin ve felsefenin önemli problem alanlarından biri olmuştur. Bu metindeki amacımız, Newton fi- ziğinde ve Einsteinın görelilik fiziğinde uzay ve zaman kavramlarının Reichen- bach tarafından yorumlanışını analiz etmektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda metinde öncelikle Reichenbachın uzay ve zaman felsefesi araştırılıp, Reichenbachın epistemolojisindeki temel kavramlar ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Daha sonra Newton fiziği ve görelilik fiziğinde ele alınan şekli ile uzay ve zaman kav- ramlarının kıyaslaması yapılmıştır. Sonuç bölümünde, bu araştırmalar ışığında, uzay ve zaman kavramlarının Reichenbachın epistemolojisi üzerinden değer- lendirilmesi ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır.
