ON ONTOLOGICAL, EPISTEMOLOGICAL AND SEMANTIC MEANINGSOF NON-CONTRADICTION PRINCIPLE IN ARISTOTLE

ARİSTOTELES'TE ÇELİŞMEZLİK İLKESİNİN ONTOLOJİK, EPİSTEMOLOJİK VE SEMANTİK ANLAMLARI ÜZERİNE

Abstract

Aristotle tries to elucidate the meanings of non-contradiction principle in Metaphysics to gain knowledge of essence and maintain a scientific investigation. It is possible to talk about three controversial meanings of this principle. The first one is usually accepted as ontological, and states that it is not possible for the same thing to belong and not to belong at the same time to the same thing in the same respect. The second deals mostly with doxa and tells us that it is not possible for a thing to be and not to be at the same time. The final one is expressed semantically and deals with assertions: opposite assertions can't be true at the same time. Within these meanings, thanks to the non-contradiction principle we have the opportunity for scientific inquiry, reasoning and communication, which we can't do without this principle. In this respect, this article will try to analyze and give an account of these three meanings.

Özet

Aristoteles Metafizik'te Çelişmezlik İlkesinin (non-contradiction) özün bilgisini elde etmede ve bilimsel bir incelemeyi devam ettirmede ne gibi anlamlara sahip olduğunu ayrıntılı bir biçimde açıklamaya çalışır. Bu bağlamda çelişmezlik ilkesinin üç tartışmalı anlamından bahsetmek mümkündür. İlki daha çok ontolojik olarak kabul edilir ve bir şeyin aynı bakımdan aynı anda aynı şeye ait olmasının ve olmamasının mümkün olamayacağını dile getirir. İkinci daha çok kanıları/inanmayı ele alır ve aynı şeyin hem olmasının hem de olmamasının mümkün olmadığını söyler. Son olarak üçüncü ise savları/iddiaları konu etmesi anlamında dilsel/semantik olarak ifade edilir ve buna göre karşıt ifadeler aynı anda doğru olamaz. Bu üç anlam içerisinde Aristoteles için çelişmezlik ilkesi sayesinde, kendisi olmaksızın gerçekleştiremeyeceğimiz, bilimsel inceleme, akıl yürütme ve iletişim şansına sahip oluruz. Söz konusu makale üç anlamı analiz etmeye ve değerlendirmeye çalışacaktır.
