Abstract

A similar discussion to the one in modern logic literature on the nature of implication Was held systematically in the ancient world. This subject was discussed first in megaric School which was interested in presenting a truth table for logical Connectives, then in stoic School, which is considered the successor of megaric School. The discussion included topics such as what implication is, the conditions Under which a conditional is true or false, what kind of a relation was supposed To hold between the antecedent and the consequent in a true conditional. As Sextus empiricus, cicero and diogenes laertius are the major names who cite The discussion the logicians who were involved İn the discussion are philo and Diodorus Cronus. In addition to their definitions, there are two definitions whose Holders were not known, one of which İs presumed to belong to the peripatetic School. Each one of these four definitions were put forth announcing others as False, asserting themselves as the true definition of implication. Aside from the historical significance discussion holds, there is another point Which makes it worth studying, namely how it lead to the development of modern Logic. Important logicians such as Frege, Russell, lewis, peirce were involved İn The modern adaptation of the discussion which originally took place İn 4th century BC, and the answers given to the question on the nature of this relation gave rise To the birth of new fields in modern logic. This study aims at presenting the discussion on what implication is in two of the Most infl uential logic schools of the ancient period, namely Megara and Stoa Schools.
